Lahana Eleni – Professor of Health Services Management

Welcome to the Department of Public and One Health at the University of Thessaly.

The Department of Public and One Health, a pioneering department in Greek higher education dedicated to this field of study, was established in 2019 (Government Gazette 13/29-01-2019). Our first graduates received their degrees in July 2023. The department belongs to the School of Health Sciences at the University of Thessaly, alongside the Departments of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Nursing, and Physiotherapy.

Our curriculum aims to provide education and research opportunities in assessing health needs, implementing community-level interventions for health improvement and environmental protection, leveraging healthcare services and policies, and evaluating intervention effectiveness. It also emphasizes a multi-level approach to modern public health within an international and globalized context.

The interdisciplinary and holistic perspective of human, animal, and environmental health represents an innovative approach that positions the Department of Public and One Health at the forefront of the international scientific community.

Your four year education in interdisciplinary risk assessment and management arising from the interactions between humans, animals, and the environment will prepare you for a successful professional career. Graduates will be equipped to work as scientific, administrative, and educational professionals across a broad range of public health sectors.

Our graduates benefit from recognized professional rights as established by Law 4999/2022 (Government Gazette 225/A/7-12-2022). Specifically, under Part Z, Article 32, paragraph 1, graduates of our department hold the professional rights of public health graduates (Presidential Decree 83/1989). They obtain a Public Health Practice License (Public Health Inspector) and qualify for civil service positions in both the central and broader public sector (under the jurisdiction of ASEP), classified under PE Administrative or Economic sectors, as per Presidential Decree 347/2003 (Government Gazette 315/A/31-12-2003), which amended the provisions of Presidential Decree 50/2001 (Government Gazette 39/A/5-3-2001), unless stated otherwise in specific job announcements. Additionally, they qualify for positions in the “PE 87.10 – Public Health” sector of Primary and Secondary Education under the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs (Government Gazette 38/A/2-3-2018, Law 4521/2018).

All faculty members of the department hold high academic qualifications and possess significant experience in teaching and research in Public and One Health, as well as in Health Policies. I encourage you to take full advantage of their expertise and the resources provided by the University of Thessaly to achieve your academic and professional goals.

On behalf of the entire faculty and staff of the Department of Public and One Health, I wish you great success in your studies!
