Department Overview

The University of Thessaly operates across five cities, comprising eight Schools and 35 Departments.

The University of Thessaly operates across five cities, comprising eight Schools and 35 Departments.

The School of Health Sciences consists of six departments, listed alphabetically:

  1. Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (Larissa)
  2. Department of Public and One Health (Karditsa)
  3. Department of Medicine (Larissa)
  4. Department of Veterinary Medicine (Karditsa)
  5. Department of Nursing (Larissa)
  6. Department of Physiotherapy (Lamia)

The Department of Public and One Health at the University of Thessaly was established in 2019 (Government Gazette Issue 13/29-01-2019) and is based in Karditsa. Other departments located in Karditsa include:

  • The Department of Veterinary Medicine
  • The Department of Food Science and Nutrition
  • The Department of Forestry, Wood Sciences, and Design

Graduates of the Department of Public and One Health gain the necessary knowledge and skills to:

  • Control endemic diseases
  • Design and implement successful prevention campaigns (e.g., for depression, cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, accidents, etc.)
  • Manage crises and develop measures to prevent and respond to natural disasters
  • Oversee healthcare services and manage population health by optimizing resource allocation
  • Evaluate zoonotic risks – diseases transmitted from animals and food to humans

The four-year interdisciplinary education in risk assessment and management related to human, animal, and environmental health leads to a Level 6 degree under the National Qualifications Framework. Graduates can pursue careers as scientific, administrative, and educational professionals in Public Health, working across various fields.
